Voices Inside comprises the debut CD release of electroacoustic and live-electronic works by Irish based Brazilian composer Victor Lazzarini. The album contains a variety of music, ranging from vocal explorations to a Jazz-inspired eulogy to John Coltrane. These works portray, mosaic-like, the eclectic nature of Lazzarini's compositions, a meeting point of various musical streams and interests; the contemporary and the ancient, the technological and the primeval.

A short note regarding the bonus track Unreal City

This piece is a study on vocal synthesis and transitions that can be created between granular, bubble-like textures, and the sounds of
chorals. It evolves from very simple sounds that congeal into sung vowels and then are dissolved again, only to come back more strongly towards the end. The title refers to the verses from T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land:

Unreal City,
Under the brown fog of a winter dawn,
A crowd flowed over London Bridge, so many,
I had not thought death had undone so many.

Unreal City is the first piece I composed completely inside a computer: the synthesis was done using formant wave synthesis in
Csound; the editing and mixing was carried out with the software provided by the Composer’s Desktop Project. All of these integrated a collection of programs running under a teletype-like terminal in an Atari ST. Once completed, the piece was then streamed from the computer directly to a digital audio tape. While working in the box is a common practice today, it was not the standard practice in 1994: external hardware, splicing tape, multitrack machines, and mixing desks were the normal tools of an electronic music studio. I felt the approach liberating, and have not looked back since.

Victor Lazzarini was born in Londrina, Brazil. He began his musical studies at the local conservatory and his first contact with composition was at the winter courses of the Festival de Musica de Londrina as a pupil of Aylton Escobar and Claudio Santoro. He read music at Campinas State University (UNICAMP) as a composition pupil of Damiano Cozzella and Almeida Prado and, following graduation, was awarded a scholarship to pursue postgraduate study at the University of Nottingham, where he obtained his doctoral degree in 1996. He is currently Senior Lecturer at the Department of Music and director of the Music Technology laboratory at NUI Maynooth. Major composition awards include the Hallward Composition Prize (1996) for his Magnificat, a large-scale work for voices, choir, instruments, orchestra and tape; and first prize at the 2006 IMRO/AIC Mostly Modern International Composition Competition for Dance of the Dawn.
